Varier Kneeling Chair February 28 2015

In the course of the average day we have the chance to use lots of different chairs here at Back Care Basics. When working remotely, or away from the office, I use the Varier kneeling chair with a back known worldwide as the Variable. Available both with and without the back stem its a spectacular way to sit actively. Mine happens to have that upright back piece. Shoppers ask if its truly functional and I explain 'yes' go for it if the budget allows. The standard Variable without the back is excellent as well. If you are curious, most of the Variables that we sell are 'sans' back but its a nice little ad on and I like it.

The Variable is a high quality piece of furniture from Norway built to last a lifetime. Its easy to move around your home or office workspace. We know one lady from Colorado that ended up buying four to place in the various rooms of her home. We finally asked her what she was doing with them all and she told us that she originally bought one and carried it all over the house. Then she ordered a second one and then she finally gave up and bought two more so she had one in each of her favorite spaces. Yeah, that's how much people love these things! It is light and easy to move around not to mention the comfort and support that it spins off.

Have a question? Like to talk to someone about the benefits of a kneeling chair? Please call us at 800.858.8987 or email us. Start sitting actively its just better for you.

Stylish Sit-to-Stand Desk Sets for Your Workspace November 03 2014

The latest ergonomic functionality & style!

Backcare Basics has teamed up with the newest manufacturer of sit/stand desks ... Upstanding Designs of New England. We are happy to introduce what we believe to be the most ergonomically functional and stylish desk and stool combination that we have ever seen. And, we've done it at a price that usually buys the desk alone.

We have been waiting for quite some time to pair up our Move Stool with the appropriate sit/stand desk. Basically, we did not see the mating of present industrial designed desks with the stylish functionality of the Varier stool very appealing for the money. The stylish Move Stool provides many body positioning options when an adjustable height desk is set to a standing height; a feature which is particularly appealing to the ergonomists we speak with. The Move Stool allows for "perching" while working at elevated desk heights and is as infinitely adjustable as this well thought out desk design itself. With the introduction of the Metropolitan Desk we discovered the best combination of style and functionality to match the capabilities of a great ergonomic stool and decided to offer this economical Desk-Stool Set option to our clients.

A Boston Globe article, published today, offers some great insight into the benefits of varying positions while at work vs. sitting or standing exclusively for long periods of time. Here are a couple of insightful excerpts ...

"More than a dozen studies conducted over the past decade suggest that too much sitting leads to more disability as we age, doubles the risk of diabetes and heart disease, and could even shorten our lifespan. For example, Harvard researchers found in a February study involving more than 92,000 women that the more time participants spent sitting at work, driving, or watching TV, the greater their risk of dying from heart disease, cancer, or strokes."

"Such news may have contributed to a 50 percent rise in the sales of standing desks over the past year as more companies invest in them for their employees." The article states.

And ... “Standing all day isn’t the answer,” said Alan Hedge, a design and ergonomics professor at Cornell University. “That’s where we were 100 years ago, and we needed to develop chairs to prevent curvature of the spine, backaches, and varicose veins.”

A hot topic today? I'll say, but we at Backcare Basics have been working to help folks get into the correct positions at work and play for many years. Active Sitting is delivered by virtually all the products we sell for office and home but the Metropolitan Desk and the Move Stool may be the perfect solution to helping sit/standers assume many many different positions while providing the flexibility of moving on the job.

This One Chair Does It All & Eliminates SLS July 16 2014

We don't often get on a soapbox about the beauty of a chair but this one's an exception. The Varier Gravity balans chair is not only a wonder to behold but it goes a long way towards totally eliminating SLS. Readers of our "BCB Updates" blog will remember our home grown acronym for "Stagnant Long-Term Sitting" which others have called the "Sitting Disease".

The sitter never stagnates in this chair! The Gravity balans four positions takes the user from the kneeling chair working position to the zero gravity position where the legs are elevated above the heart. This range of motion and the ability to move while sitting is unexcelled. But as they say a picture is worth a thousand words but this video tells it all.

Automatic Ergonomic Chair Adjustments Are Here! June 12 2014

Ergonomically correct sitting posture is great for your body while you work or play. We all seem to acknowledge that quite easily, but few of us have chairs that help us with achieving that posture. Some people think that perfect ergonomic sitting solutions might only be achieved by purchasing customized chairs that are specifically tailored to fit your body. This might, in fact, be the best physical solution but it certainly isn’t the best financial solution to better sitting posture. A custom designed chair made to fit a single body doesn’t adapt to multiple users well or to body changes of the sitter for that matter. The result has been for manufacturers to make office chairs with as many adjustments as possible to accommodate different user body types. The advantage of this approach allows the manufacturer to mass-produce chairs at lower cost resulting in a more reasonable selling price and wider appeal to customers in the marketplace.

However, what we have found over the time we have been in the business of making people more comfortable and less prone to having back issues while sitting, is that the majority of the people using highly adjustable chairs do not take the time to understand how to use them.  So like many other industries, advancing technology is helping to make chairs available that include automatic adjustments requiring little or no user intervention be effective.

Sound familiar? The extreme of this is Google’s new autonomous or driverless car. We never thought we’d see it but, in the long run, the more things can be done properly for us automatically, the higher the value of the item in question to the people using it. This is particularly true for chairs. Simple and automatic is always a good combination. Automated ergonomic technology is starting to appear today.

Global Total Office, one of Backcare Basics’ long-standing partners, is leading the way when it comes to automating chair adjustability at very affordable prices. Not long ago we introduced Global’s Loover task chair and, more recently, the Vion; two chairs that automate chair back tilt tensioning by using Global’s Weight Sensing technology. These chairs are the first of their kind and both do it with style that works for most environments.

Why is this an important step in ergonomic progress? Simply because ergonomists agree that our body should maintain an “open” angle between our laps and chests when sitting, a very important aspect of ergonomically correct sitting. And, having the ability to lean back in our chairs allows for movement accomplishing another recommended ergonomic benefit. But what is the right amount of tilt? Well that depends on a number of things including the weight of the sitter. Global’s Weight Sensing Synchro-Tilt mechanism knows that answer simply by “feeling” the weight on the seat and reacting to it differently for varying loads.

This recently introduced mechanism by Global allows for the backrest to recline at a faster rate than the seat, increasing the angle between your torso and thighs. The force it takes to accomplish this is automatically sensed by the new design so no manual adjustment by the sitter is required. Another benefit of this technology is that it allows for you to rock comfortably, without heavy pushing thus reducing muscle fatigue while moving as recommended by the experts.

Like what you’ve read? Here are the 10% discount codes for the Loover (LOOVER0614) and Vion (VION0614) Weight Sensing Task Chairs referenced above. Enter these codes at checkout, they will be available for our BCB Updates readers through June 30, 2014.

Are you sitting down? Read This! May 30 2014

We all constantly hear about what we should be doing regarding our daily activity level in order to become healthier and live longer. However, an article in USA Today in March of this year sites a study that makes some startling discoveries in one respect but basically it hangs some real danger signs on being sedentary that really drive the message home.

Nanci Hellmich of USA Today writes about the Kaiser Permanente study conducted by one of their Senior Scientists, Deborah Rohm Young, dealing with the effects of being sedentary in our work and leisure activities.

Here are the story highlights:

  • Men who sit five or more hours a day have an increased risk of heart failure
  • Those who exercise very little are also at greater risk
  • The bottom line: Sit less, move more and try to meet federal guidelines

This is definitely recommended reading, click here to read the facts that are presented and the conclusions drawn.

Our friends at Varier Furniture know all to well about sedentary sitting. We call it "SLS" (Sedentary Long-term Sitting). Varier provides a great line of active sitting chairs for work and play and great illustrations like this one. They also point out that: "Research has linked too much sitting to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and death from cancer, heart disease and stroke". Again, click on the image below to read the details for yourself.

Standing Desks. A New Idea? I Think Not. May 22 2014

Did you know that Winston Churchill worked while standing at an elevated desk?

Certainly this is proof of the old adage that "what goes around comes around" and "that some things old are new again". Today, heeding the advice of the ergonomic community, people are using the appropriately named Sit/Stand desk to stay moving while at work. Statistics show that the more people are able to move freely while sitting, standing or "perching" at their workstation, the more productive they become. Of course, the major benefit ends up to be that those who move while working do not experience the back pain that long-term stagnant sitting causes.

While Churchill's desk was fixed at a specific height, today the adjustable desk has allowed us to choose what height we would like to work at at any time. These desks can be used at the "traditional" seated height to as high as 46" which presents another problem to solve. That is "Do I need more than one height chair at my desk?" The answer is emphatically, NO! The addition of an adjustable sit/stand/perch stool can do it all. So, unlike Mr. Churchill's standing-only desk we now have variable height desks and chairs for even more ways to stay comfortable while working. Statistics are telling us that the average office worker sits for, on average, 9 hours each day which certainly contributes to the growing problem of obesity around the world. And certainly not good.

But if each of us took a page from Mr. Churchill's book and focused on standing for 3 of those 9 hours instead, we would burn additional calories due to increased heart rates and body movement. In fact, some calculations say as much as 8 lbs. annually could be shed from just that one minor change in our working habits. And, I believe we all know that a healthier workforce is a more productive workforce and great for business no matter what field you're in.

Let us know your thoughts on whether you think your team could benefit from using adjustable workstations and seating in your environment. We love to work with those that do think they might to help assess and ensure that the best selections are made at the most economical prices within budgets. Everyone wants value for the dollars spent, especially in business.

New to Kneeling Chairs? - Learn the Benefits in This Video April 18 2014

Varier Furniture, one of our favorite partners, not only invented the Variable balans kneeling chair, it has been manufacturing the highest quality original and additional designs that offer the benefits of #activesitting for over 35 years.

Varier has recently been producing short, entertaining and educational videos on #activesitting. This one gets down to the description of the balans concept benefits to you and your back.

Five sitting positions that cause back pain. April 17 2014

How many of the five affect you? Check Out These Common Issues That Cause Back Pain!!

#1 - Rounded Shoulders - If you're slouching, that puts stress on your lower back, you overuse those muscles, then you become fatigued and have soreness and discomfort. So your childhood advice from grownups is still correct (maybe more so) today … “shoulders back”.

#2 - Head Forward - Your head should be directly over your shoulders when you sit or stand. This puts the spine into a “stress free” natural position whether seated or standing.

#3 - Hunch-backing - No “hunching”, the back should be straight and resting against a traditional chair’s back to provide support to the lower curve of the back, or lumbar area. With backless chairs, like many kneelers, the spine is automatically adjusted to the assure correct back positioning for optimum comfort.

#4 - Poor Feet Positions - When sitting in a “traditionally” designed office chair, it should be adjusted to position your knees slightly lower than the hips, and your feet should be able to rest on the floor or foot stool. With kneeling chairs this is not necessary as the “open angle” formed between the upper torso and your thighs promotes free blood flow throughout your body quite naturally.

#5 - Stagnant Long-Term Sitting (SLS) - Move, move, move - Just as important as proper positioning, experts say, is getting up and walking every 20 to 30 minutes for about five minutes. Movement increases blood flow and oxygen to muscles that have been holding the body in one position and helps refresh them.

The Best Solutions Are the Simplest Solutions ... All It Takes is Some Concentration & New Habits Can be Formed!!

How one easy sitting change can make you more productive. April 10 2014

Let’s face it, you’re going to have to change something to combat the negative effects of sitting in one place for extended periods of time. The experts say that we should get up and change our posture, stretch and generally take a break to exercise to mitigate back pain. All great ideas but, I don’t know about you, when I’m on a roll and producing good results for what I’m doing at the time I DO NOT want to be interrupted by anyone or anything, especially taking exercise, that interferes with my productivity.

But, what if you and I could do both AT THE SAME TIME? We can and I have done so by simply changing to a chair that moves while I’m in it. And better yet, I don’t have to do anything consciously to make it happen. The key is working on a chair that moves when your body moves. So rather than getting one that puts you into one “ideal” position, active sitting chairs respond to your body’s movement which comes naturally as we “fidget” or reposition ourselves for whatever reason while we’re in it.

There are a ton of different “solutions” that manufacturers have come up with that are so called perfect but, the truth is, there is no one magical design that works for everyone. However, that being said, I have found that active sitting stools come as close to a being a universal solution as any we've seen so far. Why? Simply put they are adjustable for height, lean in the direction you need to go without the need to alter its settings, rotate and “glide” from place to place easily. With this kind of flexibility these stools allow us all to remain moving while seated.

So whether you choose a stool on casters, one with an inverted “dome” base design or one with a moveable joint base design you can be mobile while also being able to “lean” into your work with ease. Active sitting stools can also be the only chair you need when working at a sit/stand desk which many of us do today.

Why Active Sitting Helps Almost Everyone Who Practices It! April 06 2014

We have all become quite sedentary. Humans are the consummate spectators who sit at their desks, sit at their workbenches, sit at sporting events, sit while driving and mostly sit at public functions. Then we go home and sit some more. "Active sitting” helps to counteract the negative effects of “Stagnant Long-Term Sitting”. “SLS” has become a very large part of everyday living and it’s evident whether we are at work or play.

All of this inactivity takes its toll on our bodies in so many ways. SLS, the lack of movement while sitting, has been linked to a number of serious health issues like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. At least one well known healthcare provider   points out that it believes SLS to be more dangerous to humans than smoking. So, quite simply, the answer is to find ways to keep our bodies in motion during extended periods of sitting. Staying in motion is healthier for us all. Medical experts agree that any one of the long list of active sitting benefits can make any and everyone healthier.

So here’s the extensive list of why active sitting benefits almost everyone:

  • Promotes Overall Natural Body Movement
  • Allows for Continuous and Automatic Exercising of Muscles
  • Strengthens Core and Abdominal Muscles
  • Improves Posture to a More Natural Upright Position
  • Reduces Pressure on Vertebral Disks, Reducing Back Pain
  • Eliminates Un-Natural Hunched Back Posture
  • Prevents Tension in Neck and Shoulders
  • Ensures and Enhances Deep Breathing Improving Oxygen Levels
  • Increases the Circulation of Blood to the Lower Extremities
Which ones will benefit you the most?

Talk About Active Sitting October 10 2013

Move Stool on WheelsSo what do you think? The Move Stool from Varier has always been a great seller with its "dished" base and now, with the addition of the Move Stool on Wheels, it is about to become more versatile than ever.

Our recent blog postings have referred to SLS (Stagnant Long-Term Sitting) as something to be avoided as movement or #activesitting makes for healthier bodies. With the new Move Stool on Wheels that allows the sitter to roll around as well as tilt while never having to leave the chair, there's more mobility and more comfort in the work place.

Look for our website posting announcing the availability of the Move Stool on Wheels shortly. It is expected to arrive in the U.S. this December so our posting on the Backcare Basics website will be up soon. This will enable pre-orders to be placed and assure rapid delivery of the sure to be hot item in Varier's line of #activesitting products at the time of its introduction here in the states.

SLS is Everywhere but Solutions are NOT!! September 19 2013

If you’ve been following our blog you know that our focus is on what we call   #activesitting as a solution to “Stagnant Long-Term Sitting” affects. Many solutions have been offered but few have succeeded in helping with eliminating the negative affects of SLS.

For example, way back in the ‘60s, IBM advertised to the press that their top executives were fond of using stand-up desks. The claim being, of course, that standing vs. sitting kept the user more alert while encouraging change of position and, therefore, maintain comfort. Great idea, but standing too long is almost as bad as sitting too long and other solutions were eventually created.

The sit/stand desk is one of the solutions that either manually or electrically allows for desk height adjustment to accommodate the seated or standing positions of the user. The desk user stands upright, uses a stool or, in many instances, uses a second, normal height chair, making for a cluttered workspace. The best solution to this situation is to design a desk chair or stool that is height adjustable allowing for a single chair solution.

In recognition of this trend, Backcare Basics has researched and found chairs and stools that supply vertical adjustment and allow free body movement for those using today’s sit/stand desk solutions. When a desk is in the standing position these chairs act more as a standing assistant than a sitting device and, in the lowered configuration, they also allow for comfort and movement there.

In the photo above, you can see me positioned at an elevated sit/stand desk in a Varier Active, which is extremely comfortable at either the standard chair or elevated stool heights. You can find other options on our website as well and we’ll be covering those in future posts soon.

Stagnant, Long-Term Sitting (SLS) – It Hurts! September 09 2013

We’ve all experienced it! We’re working, studying, watching a movie or just plain reading and we get so engrossed in what we’re doing that we literally sit still for really long stretches of time without changing positions. Then, when we do finally move, we’re stiff and realize that we’ve been so sedentary that upon moving the aches and pains appear. That’s what results from SLS and we believe that we can prevent the likes of the pain caused by SLS through the adoption of a more active sitting environment.

Let’s face facts, we are predominantly a sitting society which means that chairs play a major role in how we deal with SLS. Chairs from the likes of Varier, who we mentioned in our previous post, are literally engineered to allow for the natural urge of the body to move and vary positions. All this is achieved while maintaining proper posture, another comforting attribute that lessens the pain and occurence of SLS.

Constant natural movement while seated has many benefits; it burns calories, strengthens muscles, nourishes the spine and prevents tension build up in back, neck and shoulders. All this while maintaining the spine in its natural and most comfortable curvature configuration. So remember that movement while sitting also increases blood flow and oxygen supply – resulting in improved concentration and and improved ability to focus. Most of all movement is the key to eliminating the effects of SLS.

A Kneeling Chair Is Perfect Everywhere! July 01 2013

Upon first glance, a kneeling chair can look like a bit of an enigma. When we encounter people who have never seen one before, the concentrating eyebrows and cocked heads speak for them before they have a chance to ask, “But, how do you sit on it?” Luckily, confusion quickly melts into surprise as they discover that sometimes something different and unfamiliar is exactly what is in order.

We make no secret of the fact that we love kneeling chairs. We sell them, we use them, we tell strangers about them in grocery stores, and we’d surely sing their praises from a mountain top if we were asked. There’s no rocket science behind their construction, no magical motors or pixie dust involved. There is simply logic and an understanding and appreciation for how the human body works, moves, bends and sits. Sitting unto itself isn’t very complicated to the naked eye – we all do it dozens of times a day without a second thought. But much like breathing and blinking, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes when your body sits. A kneeling chair takes all of this into consideration, and is both supportive and reactive to the sitting person.

While a kneeling chair can certainly provide back pain relief, we encourage you not to think of them only in the realm of pain remediation. In fact, much like the many ergonomic office chairs we offer on our site, the benefits of a kneeler chair are for people of many ages, shapes and sizes who are looking to take better care of their bodies and prevent pain before it starts.

The body is an evolving, active and reactive thing; it is literally alive with changes, causes and effects. Ideally, it would prefer to be in motion – walking, lifting, bending and stretching. Our modern lives often don’t afford this ideal, as we are seemingly strapped to our desks for countless hours, regarding a trip to the water cooler as a mini-vacation. We can’t turn back the clock and go back to hunting and gathering, nor would the majority of us care to. But we can take advantage of such products as kneeling chairs to loosen the chains a little on our cubicle cave!

For as wonderful as kneeling chairs are for the office and home office, they are also a smart seating solution for just about anywhere in your home. Available in bright, fun colors, Varier kneeling chairs make a wonderful choice for children and adults alike. Many kids spend the better part of a day drawing, coloring, and having fun with crafts, usually while seated at a table. Kneeler chairs help ensure they are seated properly and securely so they can begin treating their backs right from the very beginning!
